That headline is also why a lot of sellers get surprised by their first full WFS invoice.

The fulfillment fee is only one of six places WFS bills you. The surcharges attach to ordinary SKUs — not exotic ones — and a long-term storage change that took effect on June 30, 2026 made slow inventory considerably more expensive than it was.

This is the complete 2026 fee picture, with the cost-per-order math you need before you move a catalog into WFS.

WFS fulfillment fees 2026 by weight tier

The core fee is driven by shipping weight. These are the published standard rates:

Shipping weight

Fulfillment fee

1 lb or less

$3.45

2 lb

$4.95

3 lb

$5.45

4 – 20 lb

$5.75 + $0.40 for each lb over 4

21-30 lb

$15.55 + $0.40 for each lb over 21

31 – 50 lb

$14.55 + $0.40 for each lb over 31

51 lb and over

$17.55 + $0.40 for each lb over 51

Note that the tier bases reset rather than climb smoothly — the 31–50 lb base is published below the 21–30 lb base. Run your own SKUs through Walmart's fee calculator rather than interpolating across tiers, because the boundary pricing is not linear and the tier you land in matters more than the pound itself.

The practical read: WFS is strongest on light goods. A one-pound order at $3.45 is hard to beat with any 3PL once you account for their receiving and storage minimums. By 20 pounds you are paying $12.15, and the advantage narrows considerably.

The surcharges that catch sellers

These stack on top of the fulfillment fee, per unit:

Overload

Amount

Who it hits

Apparel

+$0.50

Any clothing or soft-goods SKU

Hazardous materials

+$0.50

Aerosols, batteries, flammables, many cosmetics

Retail price under $10

+$1.00

Every low-ticket item in your catalog

Oversize 1

+$3.00

Larger dimensional packages

Oversize 2

+$20.00

Bulky packages below big-and-bulky

The sub-$10 overload is the one that quietly destroys margin. A $9.99 item at one pound costs $3.45 + $1.00 = $4.45 to fulfill. Add Walmart's referral fee — generally 6% to 15% depending on category — and roughly $1.00 of referral, and you are at $5.45 of cost on a $9.99 sale before the goods themselves. For most sellers that SKU is unprofitable in WFS at any reasonable COGS.

The fix is almost always the same: price above $10, or bundle into a multipack that clears $10. Moving a $9.49 item to $10.49 removes a dollar of cost and adds a dollar of revenue — a two-dollar swing on a one-dollar price change.

Oversize 2 at $20.00 per unit deserves the same scrutiny. If a SKU sits just over an Oversize threshold, a packaging redesign that pulls it back under is worth $20 every single time it sells.

Big and bulky

Items beyond standard dimensions move to the big-and-bulky program: $155 plus $0.80 per pound over 90 pounds, up to a 500-pound ceiling.

That is a flat, predictable number, which is useful — but $155 means big-and-bulky only works on high-ticket goods. A 100-pound item costs $163 to fulfill. Unless it retails well north of $500, you are better off with a freight-capable 3PL or direct LTL.

Storage fees, and the long-term change that bit in 2026

Standard storage is $0.75 per cubic foot per month, year-round, for inventory held up to 365 days. Then it changes twice.

Condition

Rate per cubic foot per month

Standard, up to 365 days

$0.75

Peak holiday (Oct – Dec), first 30 days

$0.75

Peak holiday (Oct – Dec), beyond 30 days

$1.50

Long-term, 366 – 450 days

$2.25

Long-term, 450+ days

$7.50

The long-term third party took effect June 30, 2026, and the 450-day rate is the number to internalize: $7.50 per cubic foot per month is ten times the standard rate. A single pallet of dead stock at roughly 50 cubic feet costs $375 a month at that tier. Over a year that is $4,500 to store inventory that is not selling.

The peak-season rule has a sharper edge than it looks. Inventory that arrives in early October and is still sitting in November doubles in carrying cost at exactly the moment your cubic footage is highest. Send what will sell in Q4, not what might.

Returns, prep and removal

Returns processing mirrors the standard fulfillment fee structure, and big-and-bulky returns are charged at the same $155 + $0.80 per pound over 90 pounds.

Importantly, Walmart waives the return fee when the fault is on the fulfillment side — items lost in transit, lost after delivery, undeliverable, or damaged in the network. Audit your returns report for these. Fees that should have been waived do get billed, and they are recoverable.

Unplanned prep services are cheap individually and expensive at volume:

Missing or incorrect label: $0.65 per unit

Missing or incorrect poly bag: $0.80 per unit

We have 2,000-unit inbound shipment, an unbagged SKU costs $1,600 in prep that correct supplier packaging would have avoided entirely. Push prep upstream to your manufacturer.

Disposal runs $0.35 to $0.55 and up depending on weight. Removal — shipping inventory back to you — adds $0.40 per pound of shipping cost on top.

Modeling your real cost per order

Put it together for three representative SKUs, assuming a 15% referral fee and standard storage at 0.3 cubic feet held two months:

Cost line

$12 accessory, 1 lb

$9.99 small item, 1 lb

$45 houseware, 6 lb

Fulfillment fee

$3.45

$3.45

$6.55

Overloads

$0.00

$1.00 (sub-$10)

$0.00

Storage (0.3 cu ft × 2 MB)

$0.45

$0.45

$0.45

Referral fee at 15%

$1.80

$1.50

$6.75

Total marketplace cost

$5.70

$6.40

$13.75

As % of retail price

47.5%

64.1%

30.6%

That final row is the decision. Anything above roughly 50% of retail price in combined marketplace cost needs either a price increase, a bundle, or removal from WFS. The $45 houseware at 30.6% is a healthy WFS SKU. The $9.99 item at 64.1% is not a business.

When WFS wins, and when it does not

WFS is the right call when: your items weigh under about 5 pounds, retail above $15, turn in under 90 days, and you want the Walmart Fulfilled badge and its conversion lift. There is no monthly platform fee, so low-volume sellers are not penalized for being small.

Look elsewhere when: you sell heavy or oversize goods, carry slow-moving long-tail SKUs that will age past 365 days, need multi-channel fulfillment from one pool of inventory, or need custom packaging and inserts. WFS ships in Walmart packaging and only fulfills Walmart orders — a 3PL gives you one inventory pool across every channel.

The hybrid approach is usually the strongest: put your fast-moving, light, mid-priced SKUs in WFS to earn the badge, and keep heavy items and long-tail inventory with a 3PL where storage economics are gentler and aging is not punished at $7.50 per cubic foot.

Four actions worth taking this week

Flag every SKU priced between $8 and $10.99. Each one is paying the $1.00 surcharge or sitting one price change away from escaping it.

Pull your inventory age report. Anything approaching 330 days needs a markdown or a removal order before it crosses into the 366-day tier.

Check dimensions against the Oversize thresholds. A $3.00 or $20.00 per-unit overload is often a packaging problem, not a product problem.

Audit returns fees for waiver-eligible cases — lost, undeliverable and damaged units should not be billed to you.

HereWeShip helps online sellers model true fulfillment cost per order and route inventory across marketplaces, 3PLs and direct shipping. Talk to us about your fulfillment mix before your Q4 inventory lands.

All fees quoted here are indicative and drawn from Walmart's published 2026 fee schedule.
